Vitamin D

Everyday new studies are released stating the importance of Vitamin D, the “sunshine vitamin”. The most efficient way for your body to achieve optimal vitamin D levels is exposure to UVB light.

Sunshine and Vitamin D

If healthy adults and adolescents regularly avoid sunlight exposure, research indicates a necessity to supplement with at least 5,000 units (IU) of vitamin D daily. To obtain this amount from milk one would need to consume 50 glasses. With a multivitamin more than 10 tablets would be necessary. Neither is advisable.

The skin produces approximately 10,000 IU of vitamin D in response to 20–30 minutes of sunlight exposure whether from being outdoors without SPF or from indoor tanning.  This is twice the suggested amount of Vitamin D needed to help prevent and/or treat many conditions, diseases, and cancers.

What is Vitamin D?

Technically not a "vitamin," vitamin D is one of the oldest hormones, having been produced by life forms including most plants and animals for over 750 million years through exposure to sunlight.  In humans, vitamin D is critically important for the development, growth, and maintenance of a healthy body, from birth until death.

A statement from Dr. John Cannell, founder of the Vitamin D Council, highlights why Vitamin D is so important. "I started the Vitamin D Council in 2002. Back then I realized that vitamin D was going to revolutionize healthcare,” Cannell said, pointing out that 36 organs in your body take the steroid hormone precursor we call vitamin D and convert it into the active form — switching on and regulating 1,000 different genes in the human genome.

Why is Vitamin D Important?

Recent studies have shown having sufficient Vitamin D levels can help prevent and treat:
  • Heart Disease
  • Arthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Depression
  • Autoimmune Diseases
  • Cancer including Colon, Prostate, and Breast Cancer

These are just a few of the conditions and diseases that studies show can be prevented and treated through optimum vitamin D levels.

What Causes Vitamin D Deficiency?

Insufficient dietary sources and the overuse of sunscreen are the primary reasons why so many people have a vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D deficiency can also result from inadequate sunlight exposure, disorders that limit its absorption, conditions that impair conversion of vitamin D into active metabolites such as liver or kidney disorders, or, rarely, by a number of hereditary disorders.

*You do not need to be tan to create Vitamin D.  Exposure to Ultraviolet Radiation may increase the liklihood of developing skin cancer and may cause eye injury.  Eyewear is always recommended.
